In Southern Spain, beating the heat in the summer can literally be an art – and the town of Alhaurín de la Torre in Malaga is no exception. Local crochet teacher Eva Pacheco and her class decided to stand up for the challenge by creating a massive patchwork of crocheted squares to cover the main shopping area in the center of town.

The end result speaks for itself…

The amazing artwork replaced a large plastic tarp put up by the city council, providing a much more eco-friendly and colorful solution. The giant canopy covers an area of nearly 500 square meters (5,380 sq ft) and features geometric patterns and organic shapes that resemble stepping stones, as well as other symbols and colors selected by the students.

It’s all extremely artistic an useful at the same time.

Thank you, class, for the beauty and the shade!
