Marcus Rashford became the first player since Dennis Viollet in 1959 to score in nine consecutive home matches for Manchester United after scoring the winner in the Reds’ 2-1 derby day triumph over Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

After being at the centre of the controversy that surrounded Bruno Fernandes’ equaliser four minutes earlier, Rashford turned the game on its head when he connected with Alejandro Garnacho’s low cross and stabbed the ball home from close range with just eight minutes of normal time left on the clock. It marked his 16th and most important goal of the campaign so far.

The academy graduate has now scored eight goals in seven matches since the domestic campaign resumed following the World Cup. He has also scored eight goals in the Premier League this term, half of which have come in his last four games.

As well as increasing his overall tally against City, the 25-year-old also matched Violett’s long-standing record of scoring in nine successive home fixtures. Rashford’s run began when he netted the Reds’ second goal in their 3-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League back in late-October.

He has since scored against West Ham United, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and City in the Premier League, as well as finding the net against Aston Villa, Burnley, Charlton Athletic and Everton across the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. You have to go back to the 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on October 19 for the last Old Trafford fixture he failed to score in.
