The Mountain Bluebird, one of the West’s most eye-catching birds, is known as the Nevada State Bird and was given that distinction for the first time in 1967.

These birds prefer living in open areas most of the time. Thus, found in mountainous terrains, deserts as well as in prairies.

It’s speculated that the female birds take priority when building the nest while the males pretend to help but lose the nesting materials quite often. Their nesting areas are generally found in cavities in cliffs, trees or dirt banks.

The Western US and Canada are two main regions where we can see these bluebirds during their breeding season. As their breeding seasons fall in Spring, they are considered as a symbol of the arrival of the particular season to those regions. The American Bird Conservancy has compared the forging of the Mountain Bluebird to that of a Falcon. Their meals mainly contain insects and berries.

However, there had been a decline in this bird population in the 20th century due to agricultural practices and deforestation. These two issues have threatened the survival of these birds mainly as they do not make their own nests. As a help, a lot of conservation efforts and “nest boxes” have been formed. You too can enjoy the sight of these bluebirds all season long if you give a try to build one in your yard.
