Fernandes and Sancho embraced in celebration after the goal, showing that the two remained on good terms despite the altercation.

It was an important game for United, who were trying to solidify their grip on the top four in the Premier League in the season’s run-in.

Villa could have gone fifth with a win, but struggled in a first half at Old Trafford dominated by the hosts.

The game came on the back of stern protests from United fans at Old Trafford, as supporters called once again for the Glazer family to sell the club.

The latest stand from Red Devils supporters comes just days after the third and final round of bidding for the club concluded, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe leading the race ahead of a Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani.

United fans displayed banners outside Old Trafford before the game, with several seen marching with flares in protest against the Glazer family.

While one banner read: ‘Full sale only,’ another was seen reading: ‘Fight greed, Fight Glazers, Fight for United.’
