The Ford GT is no more, but an electric version of the supercar would bring bundles of power, and keep the iconic Ford supercar alive.
The idea of an electric Ford GT is something we explored in a render last year, thanks to our very own Timothy Adry Emmanuel. But with virtually every car in the world going electric in some form, it would make perfect sense. One of the most iconic names in Ford’s history would make its return, while also showcasing the power of the future. It might never happen, but we think it definitely should.
An Electric Ford GT Would Be Very Powerful
Firstly, an electric powertrain would be powerful. Very powerful. We have seen just how fast and powerful electric performance cars can be, thanks to the likes of the Rimac Nevera. The Nevera was recently able to achieve an astronomical top speed of 258 mph on a record-breaking run. It’s little wonder it can achieve such speeds. The Nevera has 300 watts on offer, with a maximum of 1,813 hp coming from its electric motors. The Nevera has a four-motor drivetrain producing all that power.
The Nevera is the perfect example of the potential for an electric Ford GT. Ford of course has plenty of electric car experience now, thanks to the Mustang Mach-E as well as the F-150 Lightning and electric Transit van. Plus, its incoming engine partnership in Formula 1 with Red Bull can only enhance its hybrid and electrical knowledge further. You would expect an electric Ford GT to be at least a dual-motor affair. And potentially pushing 1,000 hp although whether it would have the near 2,000 of the Nevera is up for debate. Either way, an electric Ford GT would be punchy.
Ford Could Get The Jump On Its Main Rivals
There is a chance that Ford could get a jump on many of its rivals as well. In terms of electric supercars, there aren’t a lot of options. Sure, there is the Rimac, there is the incoming Lotus Evija and with others gearing up as well. But electric supercars are few and far between. None of the major manufacturers of fast cars, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Chevrolet etc have produced a fully-electric supercar. At least, not yet. We have hybrids like the SF90 and the Corvette E-Ray. But no fully fledged electric supercar from a major automaker.
Wouldn’t it be great to see the GT return, in electric form, and see Ford get the jump on their main competitors? While you might take issue with the electric Mustang Mach-E basically being an electric SUV, we think there would be less of a problem with a Ford GT featuring electric power. Keep the supercar DNA of the car, and you are already on to a winner. Ford could potentially make it tie in with the launch of their partnership with Red Bull F1 in 2026. At least they could in our fantasy world anyway.
No One Wanted The Ford GT To Go
Did anyone really want the Ford GT to go? Not really. The Ford GT, while an exclusive car, was a very spectacular and highly regarded car. It’s 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine might not have made the best noise. But with up to 660 hp in the first version and 700 hp in the GT Mk II, there is no arguing that the car was dramatic. Seeing the car leave production really marks the end of an era. Bringing it back as an EV would really quench the appetite many of us have.
It certainly felt like the Ford GT was retired too soon. It is a surprise that no hybrid version was dreamed up, something that could have extended the life of the GT by a few years. Enough for Ford to begin work on an all-electric version. Maybe one day that can change.
We Hope We See The Ford GT Again
We really hope we see the Ford GT again. Aside from the Mustang, there aren’t really any performance cars in the Ford range anymore. Excluding crazy pickup trucks like the F-150 Raptor and Raptor R. And the Mustang Mach-E is simply an SUV with the Mustang name. The Ford GT is also sorely missed in the racing world. This after it competed in the World Endurance Championship as well as the IMSA SportsCar Championship. The Ford GT is one of the biggest icons in the brand’s history, starting with the original GT40 and all the way up to the present day. We hope we haven’t seen the last of it.
