Andrew Garfield Reveals The One Trick He Used To Get Cast As Spider-Man: With the help of one particular trick

Over a decade after he played Peter Parker in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield finally reveals the trick he used to get the role.

Andrew Garfield talking to Peter 1 in Spider-Man No Way Home

The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield reveals how he managed to secure the coveted role of Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, with the help of one particular trick. Garfield starred in The Amazing Spider-Man duology, with his last role in the franchise being in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. After being replaced and not playing the role for so long, Garfield returned as his version of the wall-crawler for 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which brought both his and Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parkers to the Marvel Cinematic Universe through a multiversal plot.

Marvel has shared a few snippets from the upcoming book Spider-Man No Way Home: The Official Movie Special, which revealed Garfield’s special trick to secure the title role in The Amazing Spider-Man. The Spider-Man actor was asked how was his original audition for the role. Garfield then went on to explain that he was very nervous — with the actor being known to love the character since he was a kid — so he decided to pretend to himself that the audition was just for a Spider-Man short film with friends, to ease off the pressure. The trick worked, and Garfield went on to become a spectacular Spider-Man. Check out the full quote below:

“Because I was so nervous and wanted it so much, I figured out a way of doing the screen test. I gave myself an acting adjustment, I suppose, which was: you’re a 15-year-old and you’re making a Spider-Man short film with mates. All the crew are friends. There’s no pressure. You get to make it up as you go along, and it’s about the joy of being this character. I was able to trick my ego to be occupied in a corner. I convinced the part of me that puts pressure on myself that it wasn’t needed and that we were just gonna go and have a laugh.”

Where Andrew Garfield Can Return As Spider-Man NextPeter Parker 3 steps through a portal in Spider-Man No Way Home

Garfield’s Spider-Man: No Way Home return opened up several possible doors from which the actor’s next time as Spider-Man could come through. Given how well Garfield’s performance as “Peter 3” in the movie was received, there is a chance Marvel or Sony will want to bring the actor back for at least one more appearance as the web-slinger. Furthermore, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has become a demanded movie since Spider-Man: No Way Home was released. Unlike the other iterations, Garfield is the only actor without a complete trilogy since the third film was scrapped. With Garfield’s take on the character at an all-time high level of popularity, a proper trilogy finale would be a great place to start his next chapter as Spider-Man.

All three Spider-Man live-action movie actors are great performers, and each brought a unique spin as Peter and Spider-Man, with Garfield showing a more confident and quippy version. The Amazing Spider-Man 3 could have followed his trauma in the years after Gwen Stacy died — even stopping to pull his punches against villains along the way. Given the latest events, he is now trying to get back to his more vibrant self after meeting his “Spider-brothers” in Spider-Man: No Way Home. If an opportunity comes, the two-time Academy Award-nominated Garfield could get to show his full range in the possible The Amazing Spider-Man 3, finally capping off his trilogy with the most complex version of his Peter Parker yet.

If Garfield does not decide to return for a full-on lead role as Spider-Man, there are a few different avenues the actor could explore to further his Spider-Man resume. He could put on the Spidey suit for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, interacting with villains/anti-heroes like Venom, Morbius, and Kraven the Hunter. Another possibility is an MCU return alongside Maguire in the multiverse event Avengers: Secret Wars, which is rumored to include several actors from Marvel’s live-action history. Finally, another possible project for Garfield to return is the animated Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse movie, which also features a multiverse storyline. There are many options in case the third The Amazing Spider-Man movie does not pan out.
