Couple Couldn’t Be Happier When Welcome First Christmas With Miracle Triplets

The parents of “miracle” triplets born prematurely earlier this year were celebrating their first Christmas in their new family home.

Laura Donegan, 39, from Reading, gave birth to Scarlett, Max and Troy on June 26, 2019 after her fourth attempt at ⒾⓋⒻ ᴛʀᴇᴀᴛᴍᴇɴᴛ.

The trio were born six weeks and four days early by an elective Cᴇsᴀʀᴇᴀɴ, with Mrs Donegan requiring a ᴛʀᴀɴsꜰᴜsɪᴏɴ after ʟᴏsɪɴɢ more than two-and-a-half litres of ʙʟᴏᴏᴅ. Despite their ᴘʀᴇᴍᴀᴛᴜʀᴇ birth, the triplets and their mother were able to leave St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, after just six nights and without needing to spend any time in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Scarlett weighed 4lb 2oz at birth, while Max and Troy weighed 3lb 14oz and 3lb 8oz respectively.

Scarlett, Max and Troy, who turn six months old on Boxing Day. On Christmas Day, at home in Reading, the trio were visited by six members of family. Parents Laura and Roy Donegan, called their children a “miracle” and expressed relief that they were born healthy. “During the ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴄʏ we just wanted them to be healthy and we were worried there might be ᴄᴏᴍᴘʟɪᴄᴀᴛɪᴏɴs,” said Ms Donegan. “We were so relieved they were healthy. We definitely feel as though it was a miracle.”

Around 91 per cent of new-born triplets are admitted to a NICU and 84 per cent are born prematurely. For the first few months, Scarlett, Max and Troy needed feeding every three hours and it took 1.5hrs for Laura and Roy to feed them all, leaving 1.5hrs in every three for them to eat, sleep and shower. When the triplets were just 12 weeks old Laura and Roy relocated to Reading to be closer to family after spending 10 years in London.

Mr. Donegan said that the couple has come a long way to where they are with four rounds of ⒾⓋⒻ ᴛʀᴇᴀᴛᴍᴇɴᴛ. The family also went through a difficult time taking care of all three baby at the same time.  Fortunately, the couple got help from Multiple Milestones, an organization that helps parents with three or more children. The charity helped with feeding and bathing routines, as well as supporting the family on how to prepare for accountant Mr Donegan’s eventual return to work.
