Gigi Hadid Opens Up About Her Imperfections In A Refreshingly Honest New Campaign With Reebok

Gigi Hadid learned an important lesson about perfection from her mom: It doesn’t exist. That simple concept has helped shape her modeling career and fuel her workouts, and now she’s helping to spread that message by teaming up with Reebok for their #PerfectNever campaign. Check out some of the exclusive-to-SELF images below.

“From the beginning, from my mom and from her mom, I always learned that it was OK to make mistakes, OK to become better from your mistakes, and that you are never going to be perfect,” Hadid shares with Reebok.

As a former horseback rider and volleyball player, Hadid has learned that dwelling on mistakes and failures can interfere with achieving your goals. “When I was a competitive athlete, I used to be so focused on being perfect that my coaches would take me out of competing all together. I’d focus on my mistakes, which would breed more missteps—a domino effect.”

Now Hadid channels that energy into a more positive place and is focused on sharing how embracing imperfections and mistakes can help fuel your greatness. She also relies on fitness and exercise to find her inner strength. “Working out isn’t only physical for me. It’s mental. It helps me escape the noise in my head.” As part of her #PerfectNever campaign, Hadid was shot doing one of her favorite workouts, boxing. “When I moved to New York, going to the gym just to be on the treadmill was super boring for me,” she previously told SELF. “I needed to find something that was exercising my brain. For me, that was boxing, and it became my new sport.”

Hadid is the second face of the #PerfectNever movement. UFC athlete Ronda Rousey debuted the campaign in July 2016, and expressed her frustrations about trying to fit into other people’s expectations of what women should look like or how they should act. “When we worry about perfection, our bigger goals are sacrificed. We can’t look up, work hard and kick ass,” Rousey wrote in an essay for Refinery29.

The #PerfectNever campaign serves as a reminder that strength means many different things. It can be measured by the pounds you deadlift, the time you create for self-care, and the level of unwavering determination you have for achieving your goals despite setbacks. Strength is physical and it’s mental; it’s an outward display of athletic performance and it’s the inner dialogue you have with yourself daily. Strength is about ditching the unattainable concept of perfection and celebrating you for exactly how you are.

And in this case, it’s also about having some really cool performance workout gear. Apparel from the campaign is available on Reebok.com/PerfectNever.
