Erik ten Hag has already made the case for who should replace Man United star Christian Eriksen

Erik ten Hag watches on as Manchester United face Reading

Manchester United were left concerned on Saturday night following Christian Eriksen’s injury in the victory over Reading.

Eriksen looked to be in plenty of discomfort in the second half after suffering an ankle issue against the Championship opposition. After the match, the Dane was spotted by fans leaving Old Trafford on crutches.

While at this stage it is not known quite how bad the damage is to Eriksen’s ankle, the fact he was on crutches does not look promising. With that being the case, Erik ten Hag must decide who shall replace the 30-year-old for potentially a spell.

It would seem by the comments made earlier this month that Ten Hag has a direct replacement in mind for Eriksen. Ahead of the Reds’ clash with Everton, Ten Hag inadvertently set out the case for why Fred should be trusted to come in for the former Tottenham Hotspur man.

Speaking before the third round FA Cup tie, Ten Hag explained to United’s website: “We emphasise a lot of times that we’ve often had players who score goals when they come on from the bench, like Fred did last week [vs Nottingham Forest]. Every time when he’s coming on, he’s ready.

“He’s front foot and he brings the right quality to the game. That is great to have that as a team and as a manager.”

“Of course, Fred wants to play every game,” United’s manager continued. “That’s not always possible and everyone has to battle for his position but there’s good competition in the squad to play and to get into the starting XI, but, once again, we need those players coming from the bench and giving impact to the game.

“Definitely, Fred is the one – there are others as well, but Fred is the example.” Reading between the lines it seems that Ten Hag may have some regret that he has not featured the Brazilian more often this campaign.

The 29-year-old has mainly been used as a substitute this season but, thanks to the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Eriksen, Fred might be set for a spell in the team and has a point to prove.
