“You are not doing that”: Robert Downey Jr Retiring From MCU’s Iron Man at the Peak Of His Career Was Supported by Joe Rogan

When anyone says the name, “Robert Downey Jr.”, we cannot help but get transported into the past where we were so excited to see the man don the suit of Iron Man. The actor simply became synonymous with Iron Man through his perfect portrayal of the superhero.

However, despite Iron Man aka Tony Stark being one of his most memorable characters, Robert Downey Jr. is definitely not a one-role-man. He has time and again proven with different projects that he wasn’t going to be tied down to just one single character. From movies like Dolittle to The Judge, Robert Downey Jr. made it quite clear that he’s able to jump from one character to the next with ease. We aren’t the only ones who think so, Joe Rogan seems to agree!

Robert Downey Jr. is More Than Just Iron Man

Usually, the thing with actors who play superheroes is that they get branded as that character for the rest of their lives. The same goes for Robert Downey Jr. who we cannot possibly forget as Iron Man. However, with his talent and sheer dedication to his work, Downey was able to play a ton of varying characters, along with playing the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.

Appearing on The Joe Rogan Experience, Downey and host, Joe Rogan, discussed the very same thing. Rogan pointed out that for whatever reason certain actors stay rooted to one character and that’s all that fans would expect from them. He then added that his guest wasn’t one of them.

There’s certain people that for whatever reason become a role and that is it. That’s what we will expect, you are that guy and you’re not doing that, you’re able to, through your talent and through your ability to take chances, you’re able to be a bunch of different things as well as be the Iron Man.”

And we couldn’t have said it better! Downey is a treat to watch whenever he is on the screen. His ability to move from one character to the next so flawlessly and swiftly is widely appreciated by his fans. Downey replied to Rogan’s compliments stating that he believes in shifting and taking on new challenges with time.

“I don’t know if I’m noticing anything now, it’s that we need to shift and we need new challenges and just like MMA and society and politics, things are moving and morphing and the information age is making things so – everything’s learning and growing from everything so quickly and then improving or disproving or discounting, whatever’s happening next.”

These are some wise words of wisdom and can surely be of some use to his fans. While Downey has a plethora of characters to his name, we cannot help but repeatedly swoon over his charismatic Tony Stark. Tony’s death in Avengers: Endgame collectively broke millions and millions of hearts. Downey’s unfortunate yet heroic retirement from Iron Man is still bittersweet for his fans. Although, looks like he found a supporter for that decision in Rogan!

Iron Man and the team of “Lunatics”

We all know that Iron Man being the first movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a bit of a gamble. If things didn’t go right, the MCU would possibly not be where it is right now. Downey even stated that the film had very few expectations for itself which resulted in it getting “a little bit left alone.” He then stated that Iron Man was ready to be “written off” from a financial point of view if it failed to do well at the box office. The team being left alone turned out to be a good thing for Iron Man as there was creative freedom to do what they thought was right. The Due Date actor called the team “lunatics” who “took over the asylum.”

“And so it was the perfect thing where there were not a lot of creatively aggressive eyes on us. And by the time they gave it to us, it was like united artists, like the lunatics took over the asylum.”

Well, the “lunatics” surely knew what they were doing as Iron Man, the stepping stone to MCU’s success, did more than great. To this day, the film is recalled whenever someone asks a fan about their favorite Marvel film. We are sensing Downey’s charm had something to do with it!

Iron Man is available to watch on Disney+.
