5 Typical Myths About Newborn Infants

Becoming a new parent can be very overwhelming, especially when it feels like every more experienced parent around us wants to dole out advice. You will be quite surprised to know that babies don’t necessarily poop every day and that doesn’t mean that there is anything wrong with them.

There are so many such myths regarding newborns that need to be debunked for your sake and the sake of every new mother out there wondering what they’re doing wrong. Here are 5 some of the most common myths.

Myth: The ᴜᴍʙɪʟɪᴄᴀʟ ᴄᴏʀᴅ stem requires special cleaning

Truth: You don’t need to go ᴏᴠᴇʀʙᴏᴀʀᴅ and use ᴀʟᴄᴏʜᴏʟ or other ᴀɴᴛɪsᴇᴘᴛɪᴄ sᴏʟᴜᴛɪᴏɴs to sᴀɴɪᴛɪᴢᴇ the sᴛᴜᴍᴘ of the ᴜᴍʙɪʟɪᴄᴀʟ ᴄᴏʀᴅ, using soap and water is plenty. Just clean it well every time to clean your baby, and don’t panic if it gets dirty. Caring for the ᴜᴍʙɪʟɪᴄᴀʟ ᴄᴏʀᴅ is easy and often highly overrated.

Myth : Babies are more comfortable and sleep better when placed on their bellies.Truth: That tummy sleeping is ᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀᴏᴜs for your baby. Because in the past it was actually ʀᴇᴄᴏᴍᴍᴇɴᴅᴇᴅ for babies to sleep on their bellies, grandparents might be still misinformed and provide incorrect guidance to new parents. Babies should always be placed on their backs to sleep, to reduce the ʀɪsᴋ of ⓈⒾⒹⓈ

Myth :Feeding your baby cereal helps her sleep through the night.

Truth: When new parents complain that their baby isn’t sleeping through the night, plenty of tips come in. One of the biggest is the suggestion to feed your baby cereal to keep their tummies full and help them sleep. However, many babies are developmentally ready to sleep through the night between four and six months, typically the same time solids are introduced. So, the myth they will sleep as a result of the cereal can leave parents disappointed. While this can be a pleasurable experience for most, it is not a significant source of calories that would impact the baby’s sleep patterns.

Myth: Young babies need to be bathed every day

Truth: This is far from necessary but if you feel like this gives you special time to bond with your newborn and creates an enjoyable experience for both of you, there is little ʜᴀʀᴍ in doing so. Focus on keeping them clean using baby wipes and make sure that their hands and ɢᴇɴɪᴛᴀʟs are clean at all times.

Myth: Teething gives babies ғᴇᴠᴇʀs

Truth: This one is false and ғᴇᴠᴇʀs in young babies should never be written off as teething, because something more sᴇʀɪᴏᴜs could be going on. Teething can cause your baby to be irritable, to cry and be fussy, but it should never cause a fever, defined as a temperature over 100.4F, or 38C. If your baby develops a temperature over 100.4F, it’s a good time to call your ᴘᴇᴅɪᴀᴛʀɪᴄɪᴀɴ for a visit.
